Belle Burden’s Strangers Hits 30 Weeks and Counting on The New York Times Bestseller List

Thirty weeks and counting. That is how long Strangers: A Memoir of Marriage has held a place on The New York Times bestseller list since Belle Burden’s debut arrived from The Dial Press on Jan. 13, 2026.

“I thought when I wrote it that it would be a quiet book, that it would sort of get known by word of mouth and women would talk about it a little bit, but I did not expect this kind of response,” Burden said on The Oprah Podcast.

From Essay to Bestseller

Woman with blonde hair sits in a chair, chin resting on her hand, smiling softly.

Strangers grew out of Burden’s 2023 Modern Love essay in The New York Times, “Was I Married to a Stranger?,” which described the end of her 20-year marriage. Reviewing the finished memoir in The New York Times, Alex Kuczynski wrote that the book “springs from” that essay. Burden followed it the next year with a New York Times Opinion guest essay, “The Babe Paley in ‘Feud’ Is Not the Woman I Knew.” It took up family memory and the public retelling of women’s lives.

Publishers Weekly praised the memoir’s “unsparing emotional clarity.” The narrative unfolds across five acts, the magazine noted. That structure gives an introspective story room to move. The Rumpus called Burden’s prose “clear and eloquent” and her storytelling “vulnerable and compassionate.” It tracked the book’s “instant rise” to number one on the bestseller list.

Strangersdebuted at #1 on The New York Times bestseller list and earned a New York Times Editors’ Choice designation. It has since gone into multiple printings. Burden reads the audiobook edition herself. Joyce Carol Oates, Graydon Carter, Lori Gottlieb, Elise Loehnen, Isabel Gillies and Adrienne Brodeur blurbed the book. People, W and Town & Country ran their own praise alongside the launch.

Burden has appeared on Good Morning America, The Drew Barrymore Show and The Oprah Podcast since publication. She has been profiled in Vanity Fair, Town & Country and The Washington Post. NPR introduced her as the author of the book “everyone is talking about.” Bookstore and library appearances, plus festival stops including the Nantucket Book Festival, have kept that circuit running through the summer and into the fall.

Next Stop: The Screen

Netflix acquired the rights to Strangers for a feature film, with Gwyneth Paltrow attached to star and executive produce, Heidi Schreck writing the screenplay and Stacey Sher producing. Burden has told Town & Country she wants to stay close to the adaptation given how personal the material is.

Vogue placed Strangers alongside Sarah Manguso’s Liars, Leslie Jamison’s Splinters and Maggie Smith’s You Could Make This Place Beautiful in its account of memoirs built around a marriage’s end. Nora Ephron’s Heartburn, the magazine noted, was an earlier entry on the same shelf. Thirty weeks into its run on the bestseller list, Strangers remains in active circulation: still in print, still booked for events, still with long waiting lists at public libraries, and now heading toward production.

Burden’s events calendar carries into the fall. The Netflix feature is moving through development behind it, the next stop for a story that started as a single newspaper essay.
